What are design patterns?

Design patterns is a word used a lot by designers, it can have many meanings and interpretations, especially because many other fields use the same work to express similar ideas. So, what exactly  is a “Pattern” in design?

In the general sense, a pattern is a word used to describe  repetition with intention.

A pattern is a regularity in the world, in human-made design, or in abstract ideas. As such, the elements of a pattern repeat in a predictable manner. A geometric pattern is a kind of pattern formed of geometricshapes and typically repeated like a wallpaper design.

The thing that makes a pattern is repetition. Repetition also means predictability and familiarity.

In digital product design, patterns refer to the use of proven solutions to common design problems. Common examples of this kind of patterns include mobile navigation using bottom navigation.

Why design patterns are useful ?

In order to understand why patterns are useful, it's important to look at it From the user's point of view. Design patterns can convey familiarity and predictability, which will result in more intuitive and easy-to-use design.
